Hardwire vs. NEMA Plug:

Hardwire: While not portable like a NEMA plug model, you can charge at up to 48A with a more permanent hardwire installation. It is recommended to hire a licensed electrician to install a hardwired Emporia charger.

NEMA 14-50 Plug: A NEMA Plug is easy to install and portable, but limits your charge rate to 40A. If your electrical panel has GFCI breakers, we recommend the hardwired option.

Important NEMA outlet requirements: Not all NEMA 14-50 outlets are rated for EV charging. Per NEC continuous load requirements, your outlet must be industrial-grade, 50A rated, and continuous-duty rated (Hubbell, Leviton, Bryant, or Cooper (Eaton) are recommended brands). A standard residential outlet is not designed for the sustained load of nightly EV charging. See the GFCI Breakers tab for additional electrical considerations.
