Tesla LDU Rotor Coolant Delete Cap
Regular price $39.99 Save $-39.99Fix the fatal flaw in your Tesla large drive unit (LDU) today before it's too late!
Tesla Model S and X (models 2012 to 2020) contain an ambitious but flawed innovation that sends coolant into the motors spinning rotor shaft in order to help keep the motor cooler overall. Coolant in these drive units makes quite the journey, traveling through the motor stator, motor rotor, gear box and inverter power electronics. Impressive but sadly a flawed system as we all would come to learn later as the tricky coolant seals began to fail.
This brilliant, new, simplified solution allows you to complete a DIY coolant delete relatively quickly and easily.
Hit "yes" on the drop-down menu to add the recommended "Permatex Sleeve Retainer" and for an additional $2 we will include a tub in your order.
Manufacturer's note: The installation is very straightforward although removing the LDU from the car is more complicated. This listing is for one cap pressed from a single disk of 304 Stainless. Recently, I noticed a cheap Chinese knock-off for a couple dollars less. They won't care about 'Patent Pending' but you shouldn't be fooled into pressing a random piece of 'iron' into your motor. I am the original designer/inventor of these caps. It takes some time to get the LDU out so you can install this cap so please don't cut corners on material!
Tesla released their own 'Revision-U' version of the LDU in late 2023 so this DIY approach is following the same path for several thousand dollars less!
Once the LDU is out of the car, you remove the coolant manifold, discard the leaky seal and break off the aluminum coolant tube. The cap presses into the 55mm bore in the manifold where the leaky seal normally goes. We recommend Permatex High Temperature Sleeve Retainer 64000 to seal the cap as you press it in. The coolant flows through the original path on your original manifold with this cap blocking the coolant route to the rotor where the impossibly flawed seal caused all the problem.
If your seal has been leaking and coolant is visible on your rotor bearing, we recommend going further to mitigate the coolant before simply completing this coolant delete. Most of the effort and labor has already been done so now is the time to replace bearings and dry out the stator and inverter if they need it. Many threads on the Tesla Motor Club forum discuss the parts and steps needed. This is a great one: https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/diy-tesla-drive-unit-repair.274163/

Please note - if your LDU is still under warranty, do NOT complete this modification as it will certainly void the warranty. Instead, check your encoder/speed sensor for blue coolant regularly - especially during the last year of the warranty period - and push Tesla for a warranty replacement if yours is leaking. They can leak for many months and thousands of miles before you get any warnings from the MCU and the coolant ruins the whole motor.
Many Model S and Model X produced between 2012-2020 have the LDU with the fatal coolant seal flaw. They will ALL leak eventually. Tesla released the Revision U in the fall of 2023, effectively giving up trying to make the seal work. Revision U deletes the coolant from the rotor but maintains the coolant to the inverter, stator and the ‘flyover’ tube cooling the gearbox. This cap replicates Tesla's Revision U in your existing manifold.
ALL rear wheel drive cars and all P-Performance dual motor cars have this LDU. Only the non performance dual motor cars have a different motor without the issue. Model 3/Y and the newest S/X are also safe. Please reach out with any questions.
